The City of Pittsburg is replacing water mains that have been in the ground for more than 80 years. But the location of the project is causing headaches for some drivers and local businesses.
The intersection of Broadway and Quincy have been blocked off for water main repairs. This is a part of water main replacement project that plans to replace deteriorated water mains throughout the city for five to 10 years.
The water main that is being replaced has been in the ground for 85 years and with age comes deterioration causing water main breaks.
Because Broadway and Quincy is a busy intersection the project manager says they wanted to start that section while the weather is still good.
The project will go from Quincy Street to 2nd Street.
While the closed roads may inconvenience drivers and effect some surrounding businesses the project manager, Jarrod Medicki, says closing the entire intersection was the only way the job could be done properly.
"This is the only intersection that we will have to tie on east and west to the existing mains there so the only way to get that done is by sawing the road and we had to have that entire thing closed traffic through there would have been almost impossible," says Medicki.
Quincy through 2nd Street is expected to be closed all week.
