Number of international students at Missouri Southern is up

Updated:

The number of international students grows in Missouri and that's the case in Joplin too.

Besides having an international mission for their own students, Missouri Southern is stepping up its marketing strategies in foreign countries and its paying off already.

The number of foreign students going to Missouri colleges is up 6.3% statewide, but it has doubled at MSSU.

Some students want to become fluent in English while studying international business.  A number of the internationals at MSSU are exchange students, which in turn allows American students to study abroad.

MSSU International Coordinator Lora Dean says she's working to recruit online through the school's website as well as a state consortium that shares international resources.

"We also work with community colleges to make them transfer-friendly for our international students," says Dean.

International students are good for college enrollment and for the school financially.  Most pay full tuition and stay on campus.  While many don't work, they support the community by shopping here.

The Missouri Department of Higher Education estimates the more than 16,000 international students spent about $418 million in Missouri last year.
