While some head out to stores this weekend to catch shopping deals, others head to the Joplin Humane Society.
A Black Furriday sale offered 25% off adoption fees all weekend.Friday 15 pets went home to new owners.
Humane Society officials say that many buy puppies or kittens as gifts this time of year, but that some of those pets end up back in the shelter.
"It can be a good idea, it just depends on the situation, it's not a good idea to buy a puppy for someone who is not expecting it, maybe not ready for it, but if it's someone, if it's for your child, for your mother, someone that has actively expressed interest in an animal, that would be fine" says animal advocate Ananda Snyder.
The shelter currently has more than 400 pets available for adoption.
