Fire destroys machine shop in Girard

Updated at 5:15 PM CST:  Investigators say a golf cart is to blame for an early morning fire near Girard, Kansas.

The fire happened inside Westoff Mechanic Repair.

Firefighters arrived just after midnight to find the store engulfed in flames.  Crews battled the fire for over four hours before finally getting it under control at about 4:30 this morning.

"It had to be burning for quite a while, we don't know how long it burned but from the initial attack it had to be burning for quite a little while in that building before it finally got noticed," says Girard District 4 Fire Chief Elmer Scales.

Much of the farm equipment, including tractors and welding materials, were destroyed.

Authorities say it had to have been burning long before they arrived.

Officials say no one was hurt during the incident.
