MOBILE, Ala. -- Missouri Southern senior defensive lineman Brandon Williams has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2013 Senior Bowl, to be held on January 26th at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.
Williams, who was named the Division II National Defensive Player of the Year yesterday by the Beyond Sports Network, is the only Division II player to receive an invite to date to this year's game.
He was recently named the Daktronics Central Region Defensive Player of the Year by the sports information directors and was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year this year, while also being the only player on defense to be a unanimous selection.
Williams became the all-time sacks leader for the school and finished with 27 in his career at Missouri Southern. He had at least a half sack in all but three games this year and had a tackle for a loss in all but one game. He finished the season second on the team with 68 tackles, 31 solo, including 16.5 for a loss of 58 yards. He had 8.5 sacks for a loss of 39 yards, two pass break ups, eight quarterback hurries, five forced fumbles and one safety on the season and finished third in the MIAA in sacks and tackles for a loss, while ranking second in forced fumbles.
Williams received invites to other post-season bowls including the BSN Collegiate Showcase, as well as the USA Freedom Bowl in Virginia (formerly the Cactus Bowl). He also received an invite from the the Casino del Sol All-Star game in Tuscon, Arizona, the College Football All-Star Classic presented by Raycom in Montgomery, Alabama and the Texas vs. the Nation game.
"I think a big thanks needs to go out to all of the bowl games for recognizing talent in Brandon like they have," said head coach Daryl Daye. "I'd like to personally thank Phil Savage and the Senior Bowl for not only inviting Brandon, but showing interest in the great players that make up Division II Football and making sure the quality of football at this level isn't overlooked. He and his staff went the extra step this year."
