Joplin company providing parts for a spaceship

Updated:

The product of a Joplin company will eventually blast off into space.  Officials with The Space Ship Company based in California are looking to C & M Machining in Joplin to assemble the interior parts of the first ever commercial spacecraft.

C & M Machining is known for making interior aero-space parts, but now they can add "spaceship parts" to the list.

A handful of machinists are currently working on the "seat assembly" of the spaceship.

C & M was assigned 14 parts to be completed in two weeks.  With the deadline approaching on Friday the staff is working around the clock.

C & M Machining President Mark Johnson says being offered this opportunity is a great honor.

"It all happened in about four hours," says Johnson.  "They sent us the models, we put some numbers on them and sent them back to them and they sent us a purchase order.  It wasn't anything that went out for bid - they knew we could do it and get it to them on time and they specifically came to us for that purpose."

The estimated cost to take a ride in the Virgin Galactic once it is complete is $200,000.
