Property tax deadline in Missouri is tonight

Updated:

Missouri residents are rushing to pay their property taxes before tonight's midnight deadline.

If taxes are not paid property owners will have to pay interest and penalty fees.

The Jasper County Collectors offices says if you did not make it into the office, you can still mail with today's postmark to avoid the penalties.

"If they do miss the midnight deadline, there will be a 2% interest and 7% penalty charge added on and the checks will be sent back," says Jasper County collector Stephen Holt.  "Right now the office is closed - we closed at 4:30 this afternoon.  We do have our drop boxes open which is located at the courts building at 6th and Pearl in Joplin or we do have it located at the west entrance of the Jasper County courthouse on the west side of the square in Carthage."

The county collector says some people put off paying to the last minute simply because they procrastinate, they forget, or they intend to use Christmas gift money to pay the bill.
