416 brave souls took on the cold today for the third annual Chilly 5K Challenge.
Hosted by the Joplin Family YMCA, the community was invited to get healthy and fit in the new year and possibly help some get off to a good start for keeping those New Year's resolutions.
"(The cold) will change your time a little bit - we have dedicated runners and they come out here, they're prepared for it, they train for it, and today they, they all did a well, well job," says race organizer Travis Renfro. "There's nothing like starting the new year off with a race at the beginning of the year. And that's the goal, is to get everybody active, start living that healthy lifestyle is what we want."
After the race the participants were treated to some chili to warm up. That was followed by an awards ceremony. The men's winner was Caleb Hoover, who ran the 5K in 15:28.51. The women's winner was Victoria Kline, who ran it in 19:20.55.
Proceeds from the race benefit the Y's Strong Community campaign, helping to give services to people in the community regardless of income.
