PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State Women's Basketball team started 2013 right with a 62-43 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday (January 3) night in John Lance Arena.

Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 14 points. Morgan Westhoff came off the bench to score 14 points, including 11 in the second half. Nine of her points came on 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range. Lauren Brown led the Gorillas with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Pitt State shot .439 from the floor, while holding the Lopers to .273 shooting. The Gorillas also outrebounded Kearney 41-39.

The game was tied once early at 5-5, but Pitt State took the lead again on a layup by Hailey Roderique and never looked back. UNK was able to keep the game close however and only trailed by seven, 25-18 at the half.

The Gorillas earned their first double digit lead of the game on a Kylie Gafford layup with 16:43 remaining. A 6-0 Loper run lasting just over three minutes closed the gap to just four points. Pitt State came back and went on a 13-0 run of its own to take a 17-point lead at 46-29. From there the Gorillas never led by less than 14 the rest of the game. PItt State's game-high lead of 20 points came on an Alexa Bordewick three to put Pitt State up 62-42 with 1:38 on the clock.

Pitt State stays at John Lance Arena for this weekend's action as the Northwest Missouri Bearcats coem to Pittsburg for a nationally televised game on the CBS Sports Network. Game time is set for 11:30. Fans should plan to arrive early for a 10 a.m. free pancake feed, the dedication of Whetzel Court at 10:30 a.m. and 2,000 free T-Shirts will be distributed prior to the game.
