Joplin woman pleads guilty to fraud following tornado

A Joplin woman has plead guilty to making false statements to receiving tornado benefits following last years tornado in Joplin.

Pamala Shafer, 37, admitted she applied for federal disaster benefits by falsely claiming her residence was damaged by the tornado.

She filed for temporary rental assistance and received a $938 payment from FEMA.

She also admitted she did not reside at the address at the time of the tornado.

Shafar could be sentenced to up to five years in a federal prison without parole and up to a $250,000 fine.
