Brown Sets Rebound Record in PSU Women's Basketball Win

PITTSBURG -- Senior center Lauren Brown grabbed a Pitt State Women's Basketball program record 22 rebounds as the Gorillas earned a 76-47 win over Northwest Missouri on Saturday (Jan. 5) in front of a national audience for the CBS Sports Network Division II Game of the Week.

Brown had only seven rebounds in the first half , but had doubled that by the 16:52 mark in the second half. She set a new career high with her 16th rebound with 12:14 left. She set the school record with her 20th rebound with 3:30 on the clock. The previous record was set by Darlene Champ versus Emporia State on Feb. 15, 1986 and tied by Jaimee Bohannon against Missouri Westernon Feb. 2, 2000.

Alexa Bordewick led the Gorillas with 20 points, a career-high and the first 20-point game of her career. Her previous high was 16 in last year's Central Regional Championship game against Emporia State. She hit four threes in the game, tying a career high. 

Bordewick was just one of three players scoring in double figures for the Gorillas, as Lizzy Jeronimus continued her streak of double figure scoring games with 14 points and Drew Roberts put in 10. Jeronimus also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Roberts also contributed five assists. Brown was just under double figures with eight points. Y'Cedria Devers came off the bench to score five points and grab six rebounds. 

Pitt State lead for al but about 20 seconds in the game. The team took its first double digit lead on a Bordewick layup to go up 20-9. Northwest was able to whittle the Gorilla lead to nine points twice, but Lisa Elmer drained a three at the buzzer to give Pitt State a 39-27 lead at the half.

Jeronimus started the second half with a three for Pitt State and the Gorillas never let Northwest within 14 points after that. Pitt State's first 20-point lead came on a Brigit Hesser three with 3:43 left in the game for a 67-47 lead. The final score was the largest led of the game, as Devers made a free throw to put PSU up 76-47 with 12 seconds left.

Northwest was led by Tember Schechinger with 13 points and Maggie Marnin with 10. 

Pitt State now improves to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play, while the Bearcats fall to 8-4 and 2-2.

The Gorillas will be on the road until January 19. Next week takes the team to Jefferson City, Mo. on Thursday (Jan. 10) to play Lincoln and to Warrensburg, Mo. on Saturday (Jan. 12) for a matchup with Central Missouri.
