More than 3,000 Southwest Missouri residents woke up without power today forcing the Carl Junction School District to close its doors for the day.
A massive power outage affecting residents in Asbury, Waco and Carl Junction.
We caught up with crews working to fix the problem at the substation northeast of Carl Junction.
Before 8 a.m. Empire was reporting more than 3,000 customers still in the dark.
The Carl Junction police station stayed online with a generator while the school district made the decision to cancel classes for the day.
Empire spokesperson Amy Bass says the outage most likely started as an imbalance due to the weather conditions.
Crews say they're still determining an official cause.
"It's something internal, our protective devices operated, we're not sure exactly what the root cause is but we're trying to determine that now," says David Boren, the Senior Manager of Substation Maintenance.
As of 11:30 a.m. all power had been restored in the affected areas.
