Authorities identify man killed in Thursday fire near Columbus

Updated January 18, 2013 at 3:40 PM CST:  News release issued by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office:

A house fire north of Columbus early Thursday morning claimed the life of 71 year old, Homer Dale Bristow, of the home. An autopsy was conducted earlier today in Kansas City, and it was determined Mr. Bristow died from the "inhalation of products of combustion" caused by the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshall's Office and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 5:10 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2013, Cherokee County Emergency Dispatchers received a report of a house fire north of Columbus, at 51 Northeast Teel Lane.

When emergency responders arrived, they found the home to be fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Columbus, Weir and West Mineral extinguished the fire and found a deceased adult inside the home.

The incident is being investigated by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas State Fire Marshall's Office.

The deceased is being transported to Kansas City for an autopsy, which is scheduled to be performed on Friday morning.

Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
