Groups Come Together to Build New Home

Updated:

Spreading hope, and giving back was the goal for many volunteers today in Joplin.

Mia Appelbaum has done community service like this before. Last year, she traveled to Birmingham Alabama to build a home. Coming to Joplin for her was exciting. She says "It's a great experience to be able to be able to engage in interfaith dialog thru my Muslim friends with New York University. It's really one of the most rewarding things I've done."

Appelbaum is just one of many volunteers coming together on Martin Luther King day to participate in 24 hours of community service that was organized by rebuild Joplin.

"We thought, you know, martin Luther king day is a whole 24 hours, why don't we work 24 hours and get as much as we can done for this specific house." says Rebuild Joplin's Rachel Grewe.

And with the countless hours of labor and dedication, the lucky homeowner of this home will be able to move in, in just a few short weeks

Grewe explains, "Roger was one of our clients who went through a lot of different organizations and we took on his project, and this is actually the site where his home was before. "

Rebuild Joplin hopes to team up with more organizers across the country to complete their main goal - giving homes to those still in need.

Their goal is to have 100 houses built and ready to move in by the end of the year.

Roger's home is expected to be ready in February, but organizers say with the all the extra work completed today, he may be able to move in a little sooner.
