Volunteers and organizers began painting 3,000 stars today at Missouri Southern State University to encourage the recovery effort of Superstorm Sandy.
They painted the base-coat of 100 of the Stars of Hope.
The stars will be given to the Joplin "On Fire" for a service program to be sent off to areas hit by Sandy.
Nationally, 10,000 stars will be made for the recovery effort.
Organizers say it's a way of showing those suffering that someone cares.
"I see hope in Joplin and I hope that somehow this will transfer over and give those people in New Jersey and New York and that area a similar amount of hope," says James Jackson.
The stars will be available for sponsorship tonight at McAlister's starting at 5 p.m. Stars are $10 for one and $20 for three.
They will be sent off on September 13.
