Southern women's basketball falls at Emporia State

Updated:

EMPORIA, Kan. - Despite a career-high 17 points from Dominique Molsey, the Missouri Southern women's basketball team was unable to overcome hot shooting from behind the three-point line by Emporia State falling to the Lady Hornets 68-52 tonight at White Auditorium.

With the Lions (10-6, 4-4 MIAA) held to a season-low 52 points, the Lady Hornets were led by 22 points from Laura Patrick, who shoot 4-of-5 from behind the three point line. The Lady Hornets (9-6, 4-3) would hit 9-of-19 (.474) from behind the three point line on the evening.

With Shatara Stone chipping in 12 points and Shonte Clay adding eight points and six rebounds, the Lions got off to a hot start to open the game jumping out to a 6-0 lead through the first three plus minutes of play thanks to four quick points from Stone.

The Lady Hornets would claw their way back into the game to tie it at nine apiece before a Mosley jumper, a Sharese Jones free throw and a Erin Rice layup gave the Lions a 14-10 lead with 8:52 left in the first half.  The Lions would get cold from the field the rest of the half as the Lady Hornets finished the half on a 18-5 run, including three three-pointers, to take a 28-19 lead into the halftime break.

The Lions would begin to heat things up from the field in the second half as Mosley would score eight of Southern's first 16 points of the half to cut the Lady Hornet's lead to six (41-35). Emporia would extend their lead to 11 (51-40), before a 6-0 run from the Lions would cut the lead to five at 51-46 with 7:12 to play.

Unfortunately for Southern, that would be as close as the Lions would get as the Lady Hornets finished the evening on a 17-6 run to take the 16-point victory over the Lions.

After shooting 6-of-24 from the field in the first half, the Lions would double their field goal output in the second half hitting 12-of-28 to finish the evening 18-of-52 (.346) from the field. The Lady Hornets would finish the evening 21-of-49 (.429) from the field, while outrebounding the Lions 37-25.

The Lions return to action Saturday afternoon when they return home to face MIAA newcomer Northeastern State at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at 1:30 p.m.
