State auditor gives city of Diamond a "Fair" rating

A Missouri state auditor visited Diamond, Missouri to present findings of an audit at the request of the city's residents.

173 citizens petitioned for the audit last year and state auditor Tom Schweich came to town Wednesday night to deliver the news in person.

The town received a "Fair" rating, which is fairly normal for most towns according to Schweich.

While there were no huge problems the auditor did say there were several smaller infractions, ranging from allocating more taxes to the city's Parks and Recreation Department, contracting vehicles, to even a problem with the amount of water loss in the city.

"49% water loss is a lot for a city this size, 10% is what we think is normal, otherwise, water that is pumped that's not paid for, that can be either because there is leakage, or because people are stealing water, but you very rarely find just half the water not being paid for - that was a big one," says Schweich.

Diamond has 90 to 120 days to comply with the audit's findings.

The town's mayor says they have already begun the process of fixing all of their problems.
