Parsons to receive $227,000 in lawsuit against herbicide producer

Parsons, Kansas has announced that they are one of the more than 1,000 communities receiving money from a $105 million class-action lawsuit against the company that produces a popular herbicide called Atrazine.

The chemical has been found in some ground and surface waters and funding from the lawsuit is expected to be used to help treat areas affected by the chemical.

Parsons Director of Utilities Derek Clevenger says in a news release that the city has worked with area farmers and agencies to establish a buffer zone around Lake Parsons to help naturally filter the chemical and other impurities before they get to the city's water treatment plant.

Parsons will receive $227,850.10 from the lawsuit.

Other area communities receiving money from the lawsuit include:

  • Iola, Kansas - $200,000
  • Humboldt, Kansas - $73,000
