Upcoming events & activities at Joplin Schools:

Monday, February 4: Joplin Schools Technology department is once again offering a FREE six-week course for area senior citizens who want to learn new online skills. Seniors can attend all of the sessions or just choose classes that interest them. The classes are held on Mondays beginning Feb. 4 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at South Middle School, 900 E. 50th St., (use the basement entrance).   

    Feb. 4: Internet Safety & Security
    Feb. 11: Essential Online Skills
    Feb. 18: Beginner Facebook (account creation & basic use)
    Feb. 25: Facebook Continued (security, privacy, & settings)
    Mar. 4: Dos & Don'ts of Online Shopping & Reservations
    Mar. 11: Grab Bag (question & answer session with your coaches)

Wednesday, February 6: Classrooms throughout the district will participate in Digital Learning Day. Digital Learning Day is a national campaign that celebrates teachers and shines a spotlight on successful instructional practice and effective use of technology in classrooms across the country. Projects at Joplin Schools include everything from students working on a doodle for a Google project, to interactive reading lessons, to students working with Google maps and more. Wednesday, February 6: Several Joplin High School football players will sign to play college football during a signing event at 3:00 pm at the JHS 11-12 Campus, 101 N. Range Line Rd.

Thursday, February 7: The Cultural Kaleidoscope, an organization that promotes individual cultures through the arts, will visit Royal Heights Elementary School, 2100 Rolla St., to present a program on Ireland. Presenters dress in traditional folk costumes and perform live demonstrations of folk instruments and dance. During the demonstrations, members of the audience are called upon to participate in folk dancing and in playing authentic musical instruments. Assemblies will be held at 8:30 am and 9:30 am. Workshops will be held at 10:45 am, 11:25 am, 12:40 pm, and 1:20 pm.

The presenters are husband and wife team Dearbhail Finnegan and Robin Slater from County Meath, Ireland. Dearbhail  Finnegan has won many competitions and performed in Germany, England, Scotland, France, and the United States. In 1999, she had the honor of playing for President Clinton at the White House for the 50th anniversary of NATO. She has many solo albums to her credit and is the featured harpist at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. Robin Slater was trained at Royal Ballet School in London, England and has performed in many London West End theater productions and television shows.
