Baxter Springs breaks ground on new 7th and 8th grade building

Updated:

Baxter Springs School District is preparing to protect its students and consolidating costs along the way.

Students participate in a groundbreaking at the Baxter Springs High School.  The high school is one of three schools that will see changes during 2013.

The 7th and 8th graders will join the high schoolers when a new separate wing is built.

Each campus will also get the addition of a FEMA certified storm shelter.

The district believes the changes will benefit students far into the future.

"It will meet the needs that we have of a growing enrollment, more than that take our facilities well into the future to accommodate future growth and also future programming changing for the education of our kids," says Baxter Springs Superintendent Dennis Burke.

The $8 million project will be paid through bonds approved by voters.
