Lion Men hang on for 100-91 win at home over Southwest Baptist

JOPLIN -- The Missouri Southern men's basketball team scored a season-high 53 points in the first half and 100 points overall as the Lions took out visiting Southwest Baptist 100-91 in front of more than 1600 fans at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. 

Southern (10-10, 5-7 MIAA) was led in scoring by 26 points from Marquis Addison as the junior went 8-15 from the field, 2-3 from long range and 8-10 from the free-throw line, while adding eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Jordan Talbert was nearly perfect for the night as he scored 13, going 4-4 from the field, 2-2 from long range and 3-4 from the free-throw line. Cameron Cornelius scored 18 points on 6-9 shooting, while Stephen Atkinson added 12 off the bench. 

SBU (7-13, 5-7 MIAA) was led in scoring by 22 points from Preston Guiot. Five total Bearcats scored in double-figures. 

The Lions opened up the game hot, leading 18-8 at the 15:27 mark after a layup fromBlaine Miller. SBU, however, tied the game at 28 on a jumper from Jaywuan Hill and took a three point lead on a three pointer from Gilbert Gyamfi at the 8:49 mark. The Lions would finish the final three minutes of the half on a 13-2 run and led 53-46 going into the break.

The Bearcats came back and took a one-point lead (58-57) af the 16:53 mark of the second half, but The Lions would open up a nine point lead (71-62) after a layup from Austin Wright with 11:34 left in the game. The teams would trade leads late, before Southern took control on a three from Addison with 4:27 left and the Lions would lead from there on out.

The Lions shot 59 percent from the field and 50 percent from long range, while making 74 percent of their free-throws. Southern held a 46-30 advantage in the paint tonight and the Lions' bench out scored SBU 32-24. The Lions out rebounded SBU 37-31, while scoring 13 points off of eight SBU turnovers. 

Southern will be back in action on Saturday night as the Lions play host to Central Missouri at 7:30 pm in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
