Veterans' Memorial Park groundbreaking in Baxter Springs

Soldiers, veterans and community members in Baxter Springs, Kansas attended a groundbreaking ceremony today for the new Veterans' Memorial Park.

The memorial project will cost around $140,000 - $106,000 has already been raised.

Officials are selling concrete pavers for $50 to help raise the rest of the money.  Those pavers will be located at the memorial.

The memorial is set to be completed between August and November this year.

Some soldiers say events like this are a great way to honor those who have served their county.

"I think events like this and memorials like this are important for not only for past generations - for future generations - so they can see the people that came before them and understand the sacrifices that they have made," says Christopher Lanbert of the United States Army.

The park will be for soldiers from across the nation.

American Bank in Baxter Springs donated the land.
