Toddler Oswego shooting update: Man in custody, charges pending

Updated February 19, 2013 at 1:50 PM CST: The Labette County Sheriff's Office says a 33 year old Pittsburg man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a three year old in Oswego. Charges are pending.

Labette County Sheriff Robert Sims posted the statement below on Facebook:

On February 18, 2013 at 09:33 hours, 911 Dispatch received a report of a shooting involving a child, 3 years of age, occurring at the Countryside Apartments in Oswego. It was further reported that the child had been taken to Oswego Community Hospital. Upon response by the Oswego Police Department, Labette County Sheriff Department, and KBI officers, it was determined that a 3 year old boy was being treated at the hospital for an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. The boy was later transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital. During the investigation, it was determined that the incident occurred at Countryside Apartment #3. A man, 33 years of age of Pittsburg, has been arrested in connection with the incident. Formal charges are pending review by the Labette County Attorney. The incident remains under investigation by the above mentioned agencies.

Updated February 18, 2013 at 5:00 PM CST: A three year old Oswego, Kansas child is hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

Authorities received a call a little after 9:00 a.m. today about a shooting at the Countryside Apartments.

When they arrived they found the child shot in the leg.

Authorities say they don't know if the shooting was accidental and they say they don't know who the child was with at the time, but they're glad the child is recovering.

"It's difficult but right now with the child doing okay it makes things a lot better for us," says Brandon Conrad, the assistant chief of the Oswego Police Department. "We're just collecting all the evidence and we'll move on from there."

No arrests have been made.

Local, county and state investigators are working together on the case.

Posted February 18, 2013 at 1:03 PM CST: A three year old was shot in the leg earlier this morning is now listed in Good/Fair condition.

Authorities tell us they received a call at around 9:30 a.m. about a shooting at Countryside Apartments in Oswego.

No arrests have been made. Authorities say at this time they do not know if the shooting was accidental or not. They say they do not know who the child was with at the time.

The Labette County Sheriff's Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are assisting Oswego police with the investigation.

CORRECTION: KOAM initially reported the toddler injured was a girl, however, a name and gender has not been released by officials.
