
EMPORIA, Kan. — Chris Sights scored a game-high 29 points and Kaleb Wright made three free throws in the game's final 11 seconds to help lead Emporia State to an 88-82 victory over Pittsburg State Wednesday (Feb. 20) at W.L. White Auditorium.
The Gorillas (15-8, 8-7 MIAA) got a combined 41 points from Kaleb Porter and JaVon McGee, but it didn't prove to be enough to catch the Hornets (12-11, 7-8 MIAA).
ESU used a 13-4 run to turn a one-point lead, 68-67 with 6:11 to play, into a 10-point cusion, 81-71 with 3:52 to go.
Ethan Cordray's 3-pointer pulled the Gorillas back to within three points, at 83-80, with 1:22 to play, but Wright countered with a jumper with 42 seconds to go to extend the Hornets' margin back to five points.
Porter scored a team-leading 21 points to pace the Gorillas. He hit five 3-pointers in the contest. McGee added 20 points and A.J. Adams chipped in with 16 points.
The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Feb. 23) when they travel to Edmond, Okla., to face Central Oklahoma at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
