Joplin residential trash rate increases according to contract with vendor

Updated:

Release from the Recycling Department of the City of Joplin

Effective April 1, 2013, the Joplin trash collection rate will increase from $10.78 to $11.36, with the Joplin garbage management fee of 15 cents, and the City's billing fee of 40 cents remaining, for a total of $11.91 per month until further notice. The price increase is based on the Consumer Price Index for water, sewer, and trash collection services and the transportation index, whichever is greater, not to exceed 10% per year, according to the contract between the City of Joplin and Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services.) The CPI increase was based on the January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012 data that was 5.4%.

Trash rates will be reflected on Joplin residents' utility bills from the City of Joplin that also includes their wastewater service. The City retains 55 cents of the trash fee for providing the billing service for Republic Services, the franchised residential trash service provider. The remaining $11.36 is paid to Republic Services for the trash collection from Joplin residents.

The Joplin residential trash customers' rate to drop off bulky items, tree limbs, and tires at the Republic Services transfer station will also increase on April 1, 2013. Persons with a utility bill reflecting the Joplin trash service fee, along with matching identification, may drop off bulky items for $6.53 per load (currently $6.20), or $13.06 if the load includes tree limbs (currently $12.40). The new fee for tire drop off is $1.97 each with a limit of five tires per trip (currently $1.87 each). Pricing is higher for trailers longer than eight feet long. Any load over 2,000 is not part of this subsidized program.

Hours for this City-subsidized drop off program at the transfer station are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a 30-minute closing for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon. On Saturday, the transfer station is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents may call ahead for more details at 620-783-5841.

For information regarding charges, contact the City of Joplin at 417-624-0820, ext. 501. For information regarding trash services or to receive the necessary 96 gallon or 65 gallon blue polycart, contact Republic Services at 800-431-1507.
