Updated March 13 at 4:40 PM CST:  Two people are in custody at the Joplin city jail - one of them accused of trying to run over a police officer.

The Joplin Police Department says at around 11 p.m. Tuesday at the 15th Street Walmart officers observed a disturbance in the parking lot.

When officers approached the subjects, one subject ran away.

Authorities say two other people were in a pickup truck and the truck driver tried to run over the officer in the parking lot.

The officer then fired shots at the truck.

The truck then fled and was eventually stopped at 9th and Range Line, where the two people inside were arrested.  John Gage, 24 of Joplin, is charged with assault on a law officers.  Tyeler Whetstone, 22, is charged with drug crimes.

Both suspects in the truck were treated for gunshot wounds.

The two officers were put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

"It's better just to remove them from any stress, further stress and just sit back and allows them time to recover," says Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department.

The officers were working undercover for another case when the incident occured.

Charges have been filed in regards to the late evening shooting that occurred at the 15th street Wal-Mart. The Jasper County Prosecutor's office has charged John C. Gage, age 24, of Joplin with 1st Degree Assault on a law enforcement officer. The bond amount is $25,000 with a cash bond of $5000. A charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute was filed on Tyeler K. Whetstone, age 22, of Joplin. The bond amount for Whetstone is $10,000.

Officer David McGough was working an anti-theft detail along with Corporal Trevor Duncan, when Gage attempted to run over Officer McGough with his pickup truck. Whetstone, who was a passenger in the truck, was in possession of a white powdery substance consistent with methamphetamine. Officer McGough fired into the vehicle as it tried to run him over.

Gage was shot in the right shoulder, and the left ring finger of Whetstone was struck as well.

Both officers as a matter of department policy have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. More information in regards to this incident will be released as it becomes available.

Officer Involved Shooting

Two suspects are in custody at the Joplin City jail following a late night officer involved shooting which occurred at the 15th street Wal-Mart. Two Joplin Police officers were conducting an undercover anti-theft detail on 03/12/13 just before 11:00 PM when they observed a disturbance on the parking lot.

The two officers approached the disturbance as one of the involved subjects fled on foot. The two officers pursued and ordered the subject to stop. At that point one of the officers turned around to contact the other parties involved. A male and a female subject that were involved in the disturbance were in a pickup truck at that point and attempted to run over the officer in the parking lot. The officer fired shots at the vehicle as it tried to run the officer over.

The truck fled the scene and was stopped at 9th and Rangeline, where the two occupants were taken into custody for 1st degree assault and possession of narcotics. Both passengers were transported to the Joplin City Jail after being treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.

Both officers as a matter of department policy have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. More information in regards to this incident will be released as it becomes available.
