Local students watch on as new Pope is named

Updated:

Crowds celebrated in St. Peter's Square as the 115 Cardinals elected a new Pope.  Jorge Bergoglio from Argentina is now the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church.  He will be called Pope Francis I and is the first from the Americas.

The announcement brought cheers at St. Mary's Elementary School in Joplin.  Fifth grade students celebrated as the Pope walked out on the balcony.

Earlier this week teachers discussed the selection process of choosing a Pope.  Each student picked a cardinal of their own to learn about.

Three students even skipped recess in anticipation of the announcement.

"Come on, when is he going to come out and when am I going to see him," Connor Steele told us.

"I was really excited that I got to see the Pope and the very first time he showed himself," says Sam Peterson.
