PSU Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Pittsburg State softball team improved to 10-4 on the season as it earned a doubleheader sweep over Drury, a team receiving votes in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll. Pitt State won the first game 7-0 and the second 6-2.

Pitt State used the long ball and took advantage of Drury errors to earn a 7-0 win in game one. Katelyn Birchfield led the Gorillas at the plate with three hits, including two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI. Kreslee Ketcham and Brenna George each added two hits, with Ketcham adding a third home run.

Pitcher Kyndel Shelburn improved to 4-0 on the season, as she earned her second shutout victory of the year. She struck out six batters and allowed only five hits in the game.

The Gorillas got on the board first in the top of the second. With one out Katelyn Birchfield reached on an error by the panther left fielder. Kreslee Ketcham followed with a home run, her second of the season, to give Pitt State a 2-0 lead.
Birchfield added a home run of her own in the top of the third for a 3-0 Pitt State lead.

With one out in the top of the seventh, George started a four-run Gorilla rally with a base hit up the middle. Jordan Bradshaw reached on an error and moved to second on a Panther error as she attempted to sacrifice George to second. A sacrifice fly by Cheslyn Mitchell scored George for a 4-0 Pitt State lead. Tiffany Brown knocked a double to center to score Bradshaw before Brichfield stepped up to hit her second home run of the game for the final 7-0 score.

The Gorillas got the scoring started right away in game two. George led off the game with a base hit to left. She stole two bases to move to third. Bradshaw walked and stole second. A Mitchell base hit through the right side scored both runners for a 2-0 lead.

Drury cut the Pitt State lead to one run in the bottom of the third. Kelsey James hit a one-out double to put herself in scoring position and then scored on a base hit by Kaitlyn Bowles.

Pitt State added two more runs in the top of the fifth as Tiffany Brown hit a two-run home run, her fifth of the season, to give the Gorillas a 4-1 lift.

The Gorillas added two more runs in the top of the sixth as George beat out an infield hit with two outs. Bradshaw hit the fourth Gorilla home run of the day, and the second of her career for a 6-1 lead.

Drury added its last run on two hits, a walk and a hit batter in the bottom of the sixth.

Seven different Gorillas had hits in the game led by George, Birchfield and Bradshaw each with two. Bradshaw scored three runs in the game. She, Mitchell and Brown each had two RBI.

Samantha Grove earned the win in the circle, improving to 2-2 on the season. She pitched four innings before being replaced by Kylie Harpst. Each pitcher gave up only one run.

Pitt State will get to play its first home game of the season as it opens MIAA play on Friday as it takes on Northeastern State in a doubleheader beginning a 1 p.m. Saturday the team will face Central Oklahoma also at 1 p.m.
