A McAuley High School senior will represent the 7th Congressional District at West Point Military Academy.
At a signing ceremony on Thursday, Mitch Wear penned his intent to play Sprint Football at the Academy. A representative of Congressman Billy Long's office was on hand to share his nomination letter.
Wear served as quarterback for McAuley and says he discovered his leadership qualities there.
Wear's appointment to the military academy continues a family tradition as Wear follows in the footsteps of his grandfather and father.
"I was born in 1994, I don't remember a time pre-911, I don't remember a time when I didn't know that I was somehow serve in some capacity," says Wear. "In the last few years, when we thought maybe I would have a more of leadership ability role, applying to an academy would be a better idea than just enlisting."
Wear will get to continue his love of football in the Sprint League. Separate from Division I the varsity league has weight limitations.
