A plan is in the works to clear the last units from the FEMA mobile home park.  FEMA, Catholic Charities and the city are teaming up in the effort to bring the parks to a close.

The plan starts with FEMA donating 11 temporary housing units to Catholic Charities.  At one time there were 586 units in FEMA housing - 32 are left - and 21 of those have plans for permanent housing.  Eleven others have not been able to find other housing for a variety of reasons.

The city set aside $60,000 in Community Development Block Grants to help move the units to other trailer parks or properties yet to be determined.

Catholic Charities will offer case management to the families and individuals with a goal of finding permanent housing.

"They're going to have to comply with certain things we expect them to do," says Catholic Charities Case Manager Supervisor Kathy Welch.  "Going to have to look for work.  If they need to apply for disability, need a job skill, we'll expect them to do that."

Welch says those in the mobile housing units will be expected to pay some rent based on their income guidelines.

The big goal is making FEMA's deadline for closing down the temporary housing park.

The City of Joplin is looking at building a law enforcement training center on the property once it's cleared.  Cost estimates were underway before the tornado but put on hold until now.
