Southern softball splits double-header vs. #23 Winona State

Updated:

JOPLIN - Behind a four-hit shutout from freshman pitcher Haley Kinnison, the Missouri Southern softball team split a non-conference double-header against #23 Winona State this afternoon at Lea Kungle Field.

Coming off posting a Missouri Southern softball single-game high for strikeouts with 14 against the Northeastern Riverhawks Saturday, Kinnison would strike out seven Warriors (14-4) while recording the Lions' (15-11) second shutout of the season and her fifth win of the season.

The Lions would use a single run in bottom of the first to win the low scoring contest. With two outs, right fielder Shelby Romies would draw a walk and advance to second on a passed ball. Dawn Grass would follow with a single, only of only two Lions' hits, to left field scoring Romines to give the Lions their lone run.

The Warriors would find their offensive pop in the second game scoring 12 runs on 12 hits, including three home runs. Allowing four runs in the first two innings, the Lions would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning when catcher Kathryn Goins would double to center field driving in designated player Haley Pypes to cut the Warriors' lead to 4-1.

Winona State would add two more runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run to left field before adding six runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 12-1. The Lions would add three runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI's by Romines, Grass and Goins, but they would be unable to add any more ending the game in five innings.

The Lions return to MIAA conference play Friday at Truman (14-5, 1-1 MIAA) when they take on the Bulldogs in a double-header starting at 1 p.m. at Bulldog Softball Park.
