Since the 2000 model year, the EPA has been rating all vehicles for fuel economy, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. In order to receive the SmartWay® designation, a vehicle must receive a combined score that is much better than the average vehicle. The criteria is assessed annually to maintain the EPA's goal of designating the top twenty percent (20%) of vehicles every model year as SmartWay® certified.
