The Brooklyn Hospital Center has acquired one of New York City’s first Olympus EVIS EXERA III video endoscopy systems, an advanced imaging system that permits physicians to improve early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and other GI diseases.

“This is a very important acquisition for The Brooklyn Hospital Center since early detection can save lives, and Brooklyn has one of the highest rates of colon cancer deaths in New York City,” says Sushil Duddempudi, MD, Director of Interventional Endoscopy at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. “The new Olympus EVIS EXERA III system has exceptional clarity and improved technology for observing mucosal tissue. This permits us to more clearly detect abnormalities, even at their earliest stages, while improving patient comfort.”

Early detection can improve treatment outcomes, reduce overall health care costs and improve the quality of life for patients. To aid in early detection, the American Cancer Society recommends that beginning at age 50, both men and women at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should be screened for CRC and polyps, and those with personal or family risk factors should be tested even earlier.
