Road and airport improvements were both on Thursday's agenda for the Joplin Area Transportation Study Organization.
Federal regulators have set a high priority on improving the Joplin airport. A crash occurred at another airport with a similar design because of confusion caused by a runway intersection.
Now the plan is to create a new route for fuel trucks so they won't have to drive on active runways, and to eliminate a runway intersection.
"We finally come to the realization that the only way to really make it totally safe is to totally disconnect that runway from that intersection," says Steve Stockam of the Joplin Regional Airport.
The airport improvements will be done in stages over the next few years.
