Southern football adds another coach to its staff

JOPLIN --Missouri Southern football coach Daryl Daye has announced the addition of Chandler Tygardto his staff as a defensive assistant coach. 

Tygard willbe coaching the defensive line at Southern and comes to the Lions after aseason at the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky. 

"I'mexcited to bring in a coach of the caliber as Chandler," Daye said."He's a young go-getter and has experience at all leves of collegiatecoaching. He's not afraid to get up in the faces of our guys and motivate themwhen needed and that's always something I look for in a young coach. He's alsoa quality recruiter and we'll rely on him in that aspect, as well." 

Tygard servedas the defensive line coach and coaching special teams at the University of theCumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Cumberlands finished the 2012 seasonwith a 10-2 record and #7 NAIA national ranking. The defense ranked 8th insacks, 10th in rushing defense, and blocked 8 total kicks, setting a schoolrecord. Coach Tygard coached two Mid South Conference All-Conference defensivelinemen, Nick Smith and Jared Stippert. Smith was also named a NAIAAll-American.

Prior to theCumberlands, Tygard coached at the University of Tennessee where he worked asthe defensive quality control coach for the Volunteers from 2010-2011. He wasthe right hand man to defensive coordinator, Justin Wilcox, and assistedlinebackers coaches, Lance Thompson and Peter Sirmon. He coached A.J. Johnsonand Curt Maggitt, the first true freshman linebackers to ever start for theTennessee Volunteers. Both players were chosen as first-team Freshman All-SECselections.

In 2009,Tygard was the special teams quality control coach assisting special teamscoordinator, Eddie Gran and managing the defensive playbook for defensivecoordinator, Monte Kiffin. For the 2009 "Chick Fil' A Bowl," he wasthe interim special teams coordinator for the bowl game after the departure ofEddie Gran to Florida State.

From2005-2008, Tygard worked as the student assistant to defensive coordinator,John Chavis, and defensive backs coach, Larry Slade. His primary role was toassist with opponent film breakdown and running the offensive scout team.

DuringTygard's tenure at Tennessee, fifteen defensive players were drafted into theNFL including six first round picks: Jason Allen, Justin Harrell, Jerod Mayo,Robert Ayers, Dan Williams, and Eric Berry. In 2010, while coachinglinebackers, Tygard helped coach Nick Reveiz to a team-leading 108 tackles.Reveiz also was a finalist for the Burlsworth Trophy, presented to a formerwalk-on having the biggest impact on his team.

Tygard hailsfrom Nashville, TN and was a graduate from Montgomery Bell Academy. He is a2009 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelors degree inHistory. He is engaged to Lauren Castle of South Pittsburg, Tennessee.
