Joplin elementary students visit Pittsburg State

Some elementary students from Joplin get to hug and laugh with a gorilla - Gus Gorilla - at Pittsburg State.

As part of the Joplin school district's Operation College Bound Program about 40 third grade students from Columbia Elementary School got the formal introduction to PSU from Gus, then toured the campus.

Columbia Elementary teacher Libbie Burd says the program helps students to think of continuing education, no matter what age.

"A lot of our kids don't see the big picture, and so we have to start putting the puzzle pieces, we talk about all the things we learn at school as puzzle pieces and how they will eventually all fit by the time they're done with education," says Burd.  "So we're just wanting them to see the picture so they can start putting those pieces together."

The kids were interested in how PSU students study and eat.

They also learned Gus is about 90 years old.
