A community in Southeast Kansas is coming together to raise money for a little girl burned in a fire and a family who lost everything.
Saturday at the Southeast High School in Cherokee Kansas, the community held a soup fundraiser for Callie Whaley. Whaley, 8, has burns on about 65 percent of her body following a fire in early March. Now the community is coming together to off-set the cost of the family's expenses. There was also a silent auction of donated items from the community.
A teacher at Callie's school says her spirits are staying high and she's always keeping a smile on her face.
"This little girl has gone thru so much and she's still just this wonderful little girl. Just smiling when she can smile. She's getting thru it, her spirits are great, and her family...they're holding together up there" says Weir Elementary Secretary Stephanie Smith.
Callie remains hospitalized at Shriner's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
There's no word on when she will be released.
Her family is currently traveling back and forth between Southeast Kansas and Ohio.
