Cherokee County residents honor area veterans and those in active duty

Updated:

Baxter Springs and Riverton residents honored area veterans and those in active duty on Monday at the Field of Dreams.

It's Salute to the Veterans and is put on by the Baxter Springs Lions and the Riverton Rams baseball and softball programs.

At least 15 veterans were honored.

Matthew McCandless is currently serving in the United States Air Force and he threw out the first pitch.  McCandless is a 2006 Baxter Springs graduate and former high school baseball player.

"It's nice to be able to come home to a place where everyone is very supportive of the military," says McCandless. "I feel privileged to serve no matter what as, an Air Force pilot, it's something I love to do and look forward to do every day and to get to come back home and share some of that experience and kind of feel the love is great."

This is the first year of the event.  Around 100 people attended.
