News release from the Jasper County Health Department:

Due to high levels of bacteria, local segments of the Spring River have been listed on the Missouri 303(d) list as impaired and not meeting water quality standards.  The Spring River Watershed Partnership has secured a Section 319 Nonpoint Source Implementation Grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to help cleanup bacteria contamination sources.

One source of bacterial contamination is from human fecal matter that leaks from full or malfunctioning septic systems into the stream.  It is generally recommended to pump a septic tank every 3-5 years for routine maintenance.  For homeowners who believe that their tank may need pumped, cost share assistance is available through the grant.  A professional pumper will be used to investigate your system to determine whether it needs to be pumped.  During this process if the pumper discovers that the systems needs repairs instead.  We can also provide cost share to help repair or replace the system.

Highlghted in the map below is area that is covered under the 319 grant for assistance.  For questions or to participate please contact Jasper County Health Department.
