Boston Marathon donations fraud alert

Updated:

News release from the Joplin Police Department

Be aware of possible fraudulent donation sites for Boston Marathon Bombing

On April 15th two explosions occurred near the finish line of the Boston Marathon causing death and injury to spectators as well as participants of the marathon.  This was a tragic event for the Boston area and our Nation.  Events from this tragedy are continuing to unfold and our thoughts are with the residents as well as the first responders in the area.

Unfortunately, whenever there is a tragic event such as this, there are people that will try to take advantage of this tragedy by trying to solicit donations and funds from individuals.  Individuals need to be aware of emerging fraud online associated with the explosions.  The Joplin Police Department would like to remind everyone to be diligent and skeptical of online donation sites that may be found on the internet.  Also be skeptical of charity names similar to but not exactly the same as reputable charities.  If you would like to donate money for the tragic event, make sure that you donate money to a reputable charity.  You can verify the existence of legitimate organizations by conducting some research and visiting official web sites.

If you feel that you may have been the victim of fraud by someone soliciting funds on behalf of disaster victims, please contact your local law enforcement agency to report the scam.
