The CDC says a quarter of American women are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives.
Organizers of a conference in Joplin on Friday hope to do something about that.
The Alliance of Southwest Missouri is made up of various service organizations and sponsored the "Community of Hope" conference to spread information on how to deal with domestic violence and child abuse.
Speakers from across the state spoke about prevention and Missouri laws helping victims.
"We have a lot of great programs in the area that intervene and work with children after abuse has happened, but our goal really is to step in at the very front line and prevent it, and never have it happen at all," says Kari Clements of the Alliance of Southwest Missouri.
Most of the people attending Friday's conference are service providers and people who work with or around kids.
