In honor of Earth Day and saving energy, the Joplin Transportation Department offered free trolley rides until 6 o'clock Monday evening.
The free promotion included all 66 stops along the trolley's routes.
On average, 13,000 rides are given each month through the trolleys and maps vans. City officials say they hope this promotion will make even more people decide to leave their cars at home and use the trolley instead.
"Every vehicle we can take off the road, if someone can use public transportation to make that trip, that's one less car driving, less congestion, less greenhouse gasses and things like that that are produced," says Robert Lolley, the City of Joplin Transportation Coordinator.
The trolley runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For routes visit www.joplinmo.org/trolleyroutes.
