Student starts petition to include sexual harassment awareness in Freshman Experience

A class in social policy prompts a Pittsburg State University senior to petition the school president.

Casey Epps has a passion for wanting to prevent sexual violence and domestic assaults.

Epps says an advocate on campus reports the number of victims seeking help on campus has tripled in the last year.

So Epps is petitioning the university president to make sexual violence education a mandatory part of the Freshman Experience and training for transitional students.

Epps says students shrug off harassment and assaults as part of college because they don't understand by definition what it really is.

"Sexual  assault can be anything from harassment to touching, and a thing as dramatic as rape but when you actually have a sexual assault it can be anything from not saying yes to completely saying no, and I don't think a lot of students understand that is considered assault," says Epps.

The petition is online and suggests 100 signers are needed but Epps hopes to get hundreds more to prove her point.
