Empire electric shareholders vote down resolution - KOAM TV 7

Empire electric shareholders vote down resolution calling for more energy efficient programs

Updated:

The majority of Empire District Electric shareholders have voted down a resolution calling for more energy efficient programs.

The vote came at the shareholders annual meeting at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Joplin, Missouri.

The resolution was proposed by the Sierra Club of Missouri.

Fourteen percent of shareholders voted to pass the resolution.

Before the vote, Empire's board of directors recommended that shareholders reject the resolution.

Sierra Club spokesperson Harry Alper says he didn't expect directors to give their support.

"It's common for boards of directors to recommend a vote against shareholder resolutions," says Alper.  "What we're pleased to see is that enough shareholders supported our resolution."

"Empire is engaged in many programs and activities in energy efficiency for our customers," says Mike Palmer, Transmission Policy for Empire.  "We're meeting the requirements that we need to meet and have been a leader in energy efficiency, certainly in wind projects."

Alper says he still wants to see Empire offer more energy efficiency programs.

"In St. Louis, where I live, I can get a compact fluorescent light bulb for 75 cents because of the incentives from our utility," says Alper.

"We have offered a light bulb program in the past," says Palmer.  "I'm sure we'll review those things from time to time, but certainly may look at it again."

Empire District officials believe their company already is a nationwide leader in offering and developing energy efficiency.

The Sierra Club says they might reintroduce this resolution next year if Club members feel Empire still doesn't have enough energy efficiency programs.
