New utility bill scam

Updated:

New reports from the Better Business Bureau suggest there is a new utility bill scam growing in popularity and Empire District Electric is warning its customers to be on alert.

The scam involves a call from someone claiming to be a utility employee asking for payment of a past due bill.

The caller asks the customer to purchase a pre-paid debit card to avoid service disconnection and then to call back with the card number.

The caller then drains the value of the card.
