Joplin Memorial Run

Updated:

2,300 runners take to Joplin streets for the 2013 Joplin Memorial Run.

The run was created as a way to honor the 161 people who lost their lives in the May 22nd 2011 tornado. Proceeds from the run will go to the continued efforts of rebuilding Joplin. Participants ran at least 3 miles thru downtown, while others completed a half marathon. The event organizers also hosted a kids run, booth vendors and a beer tent.

Since the marathon bombings in Boston the memorial board says security was top of the agenda.

"When Boston happen we immediately started talking we said what are we going to do how are we going to make sure our runners are safe we sent out messages to our runners that said we are taking extra precautions we will be totally aware I've been listening to radio chatter all day. Nothing happens without them knowing its just phenomenal" says race director Ruth Sawkins.

The 2012 Joplin Memorial Run raised $33,000. The group plans to build a museum with the funds in the future.
