3,000 flags available free of charge for families at Joplin cemeteries

Updated:

Over 3,000 flags lay at all of Joplin's cemeteries free of charge for families wishing to leave one on a veterans grave.

The flags are left thanks to American Legion Post 13, which takes donations for the flags, only to buy more for the next year.

This year the Legion worked with the city to install PVC pipes at some of the city cemeteries to keep the flags in place.

The legion hopes to add the PVC pipes to all cemeteries by next year to help better honor all those who have fought in the military.

"Each year it gets more popular because the people know they don't have to run to the store, usually their sold out of flags by the time they think about getting one, they know it's a beautiful cemetery here, they come to Ozark Memorial (and) we have a flag ready for them,' says Howard Spiva, the Commander of Post 13.

All Memorial Day decorations will be removed the Monday following the holiday with the exceptions of those in permanent vases or on shepherd's hooks.
