Iola man recognized during Memorial Day ceremony at PSU

A Memorial Day ceremony was held Monday at the Pittsburg State Veterans Memorial Amphitheater.

59,000 men and women's names are on display at the site, where families laid roses next to names of their loved ones.

Frontenac's American Legion Post 43 hosted the ceremony featuring Pittsburg's State ROTC cadets who provided firing of honors, and the Junior Marine Rifle Team from Topeka who entertained the crowd with a drill performance.

"This is really what this day is about, those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this nation for it's freedom and its way of life," says Major General Lee Tafanelli.

The keynote speaker recognized Metal of Honor recipient General Frederick Funston, of Iola, Kansas, who was known for his actions in the Phillippine-American War.
