Tips to prevent theft during summer trips and vacations

Updated:

Summertime means family vacations and day trips around the Four States, but police say that can mean an increase in burglaries and theft.

The Pittsburg Police Department says it sometimes gets multiple break-ins during a single night in the summer.

Police want to remind residents that there are several things you can do to help prevent theft, including:

  • Keeping your lights on when you go out
  • Keeping bicycles and barbeques out of sight - even when you're in the house
  • Let neighbors know when you're going out of town and ask them to call police if they see anything suspicious at your home
  • Don't put info about trips on the web and social media

"Somebody can find out you're gone, so we don't recommend that people post that they're going places," says Sgt. Chris Moore of the Pittsburg Police Department.  "When you get back - 'hey, had a great time here' - post all your pictures.  But while you're gone don't tell people.  You'll just make yourself an easy target."
