Teachers learn benefits of co-teaching

School administrators go back to class themselves to learn the benefits of co-teaching.

Experts from the University of Minnesota have data showing how co-teaching between experienced instructors and student teachers has improved children's performance on tests.

The workshop in Webb City is training the trainers so local districts know how to use the co-teaching rather than the old way of forcing teaching candidates to sink or swim in the classroom.

"It allows teachers and their candidates to co-teach but differentiate instruction to really meet students needs," says Teresa Washut Heck, of UMN's Academy for Co-Teaching & Collaboration.  "They still have time to solo, time to be on their own, but in this project - in this program - they are mentored and guided though out the process."

Webb City Junior High has already piloted co teaching.
